In July 2026, CADRE students and post-docs spent two weeks at either Boulder, CO (to visit NOAA GSL and PSL, and JCSDA; right) or College Park, MD (to visit NOAA OMD; left).<\/p>\n

The visits included a packed agenda of presentations by CADRE and NOAA\/JCSDA scientists, social\/networking events, and time to work with NOAA collaborators to advance CADRE research.<\/p>\n

Summary of OMD Visit<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

A variety of fun, educational and career-development activities were arranged during this visit.<\/p>\n

During a side-trip to an NWS WFO, the students had an opportunity to learn about operational forecasting considerations, watch a sonde launch, and perform a practical exercise to assess how the sonde data was used in the operational GFS.\u00a0 Tours of the WPC, OTC and NESDIS operations floor in the NCWCP were also provided.<\/p>\n

There was a CADRE workshop where each student presented on the their research to the DA Division of OMD. CADRE students also attended career talks from senior staff, regular OMD-DA meetings, day-long coworking sprints with OMD-DA, and seminar series with topics including GFS, RRFS, HAFS and NESDIS-STAR.<\/p>\n

A pizza social and happy hours provided additional socializing and networking opportunities, including with OMD staff. The visit was highlighted in an NWS Insider article<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Summary of Boulder Visit<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

A variety of fun, educational and career-development activities were also arranged during this visit.<\/p>\n

In addition to the NOAA lab visits, visits to NCAR and JCSDA were also arranged, including a day-long visit to JCSDA with presentations and practical exercises with JEDI.<\/p>\n

Hearing from the CADRE visitors during their presentations, and through in person discussions significantly increased OAR awareness of their work and paved the way for ongoing\/future adoption of CADRE results and methods.\u00a0 Transition of CADRE work to NOAA operations and R&D is facilitated by the fact that CADRE research is performed with the same JEDI and MPAS software systems used by UFS\/RRFS. NOAA Boulder staff also gave presentations to facilitate scientific exchange, and the NOAA-CADRE research teams met separately, many for the first in-person interactions.<\/p>\n

Summary of students’\/postdocs’ feedback<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

CADRE students returned from their visits with enthusiastically positive feedback.\u00a0 A direct outcome of the visits that students appreciated was that it got NOAA collaborators more involved in their research, in some cases continuing regular meetings after the visit.\u00a0 Students also appreciated gaining deeper understanding of NOAA modeling systems, learning considerations from both development and operational perspectives, experiencing guided hands on practice with specific JEDI and UFS components, and having opportunities to meet and network with scientists more broadly than just their direct collaborators.\u00a0 Most students felt that their research progress was directly accelerated by the visit and also enjoyed the longer term career development information.<\/p>\n
